The people of Siena prepare for Italy’s most hotly anticipated horse race, known as Il Palio. Each year local ‘contrada’ groups, representing different areas of the city, enter a horse and jockey into a competition, with the hope of waving their flags as champions at the end. The 2013 Palio takes place on 2 July and 16 August

El Palio di Legnano, en mayo de cada año conmemora la historia desde 1176

Italia es también el país de tradiciones, de hecho hay muchos eventos que se repiten año tras año, con un espíritu que recuerda e histórico. El Palio di Legnano es uno de ellos, y cada año el último domingo de mayo, se conmemora la batalla victoriosa de Legnano, de combate 29 de mayo 1176 por los ejércitos de la Liga Lombarda contra el Emperador de Alemania, Federico Barbarrossa. Antes de que los caballos Palio son bendecidos, y las calles de la ciudad llevó a cabo un desfile compuesto por más de 1.200 figuras históricas con trajesmedievales, cuya ropa, escudos, etc. fiel reflejo de las del siglo XII.

El punto culminante del Palio, una carrera de caballos es el “pelo”, es decir, sinuna silla de montar, que se manifiesta el domingo, y asistir, en 8 distritos: Flora, San Bernardino, San Martino, San Domenico, San Magno,Sant’ Ambrogio, Legnarello , San Erasmo. Se ejecuta en el manto de arena y está compuesto de dos baterías de eliminación de 4 revoluciones del anillo, en que cada una incluye 4 cuartos, y por unos 5 vueltas finales en la parte superior 2 delas pilas clasificadas anteriormente.

El ganador del distrito del Palio tiene el derecho de conservar en su propia iglesia, hasta el año siguiente, la Cruz de Ariberto Intimiano, que es unaescultura de yeso a partir de 1935 por el escultor Gersam Turri, que reproduce fielmente la cruz original.
