Brian Eno, after Bowie and U2, puts music in the Baroque Juvarra

Brian Eno is working with a sound track in the tunnel Juvarra Venaria, north of Turin. The installation will be completed by July 7 at the opening of HOP.E., two weeks of workshops and initiatives for young artists.

The Venaria Royal Savoy is one of the largest residences in Piedmont. Probably the largest in size, was designed and built in a few years (1658 – 1679) by architect Amedeo di Castellamonte. A commissionarla was the Duke Carlo Emanuele II, who wanted to make the base for hunting in the heather hills of Turin, the same name in Latin of the palace, Venatio Director, is derived from the art of hunting.

The set of buildings that make up the complex, enormous if you consider the extension (80,000 m²), including the park and the historic village of Venaria, constructed so as to form a sort of collar that directly recalls the Annunciation, symbol of the house of Savoy. The village can be joined many houses and buildings of workers and ordinary citizens who wanted to live near the palace, until it becomes Venaria a separate municipality in the province of Turin.

In 1972 he began the adventure of Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno, which is now divided into over fifty albums as a solo artist or in collaboration with others. Some have marked the history of music, such as Another Green World, Before and After Science, Music For Airports, but as a producer that Eno has revolutionized the world of rock music, working with David Bowie, Devo, Talking Heads, U2. With them has become an intellectual million copies: just turned 64 years old, signing still interesting albums (the last, Drums Between the Bells, came out last year), but most part, takes a position, he theorizes. Brian Eno says, “I am still very interested in the idea of a music that is born alone, once a given set of conditions. The composition has a life of its own, so maybe for a while nothing happens then suddenly everything changes. ”

Now he calls “generative music”, but already in 1975 on the back of Discreet Music wrote of “systems that adjust individually and can create entire songs with little or no human intervention.” The same principle is found in the iPhone app: eTrope Bloom (“It is going to arrivarne another,” announces) produce ambient music is always different, but always equally persuasive, reacting to the touch of fingers on the screen. It’s the end of the ego? “I do not know, I establish the rules, but then I do not know the end result, sometimes surprises even me.” The artist of the future for Eno is also a programmer: “In my app the computer code is as important as the sounds.” But technology is not transparent and the medium affects the message, so the music that comes from a PC will not be the same that you can write with a guitar. Eno, a pioneer of the music machines, began with a reel to reel tape recorders and synthesizers, now uses a Mac

Brian Eno has already numerous collaborations with artists or art, remember the event designed for site-specific spaces of the Museum of Ara Pacis. In 2008 the exhibition / event “Brian Eno | Mimmo Paladino. Opera for the Ara Pacis, “was the occasion for two undisputed protagonists of contemporary culture, to find themselves working together after almost 10 years since their first joint project of the Round House in London in 1999.

Giugno Pisano, a month of historical reenactments, festivals and concerts

Every year the city of Pisa celebrates its historical traditions within Giugno Pisano: the entire month of June is dedicated to traditional events, history, plays, concerts and exhibitions.

During Giugno Pisano Pisa celebrates some important historical events, mainly joint with the saint patron’s day.
These are the main events:

  • the Luminara of S. Ranieri on 16th Jume

On the night of the 16th of June of every year the enchantement of the Luminara of Saint Ranieri is renewed on the streets running along the river Arno in Pisa.

Pisans celebrete their patron, Saint Ranieri, on 17 June, but the Luminara begins the day before. About 70.000 wx candles meticulosly set in glasses and fixed to wooden white-panted frames (the so called “biancheria”) are modelled in such a way to exalt the outline of the palaces, the bridges, the churches and the tower reflecting the river.

The leaning Tower is illuminated too, by oil lamps, set also in the crenellations of teh city walls of alla Piazza dei Miracoli.

The event offers the visitor a unique feeling: the reverberation on the many tremblig lights on the Arno and the candles that are left foating on its waters semm to

  • the Festa of S.Ranieri on 17th June

  • the Historical Regatta of S. Ranieri on 17th June afternoon

The afternoon of June 17th is dedicated to the celebrations of Pisa’s Patron Saint Ranieri.
Four boats representing the 4 ancient town districts compete in a Regatta on the River Arno – the so called Regata di San Ranieri, heritage of the past glory of Pisa as an ancient maritime republic.

Each disctrict is distingueshed by its own colours:

  • San Martino – red
  • Sant’Antonio – green
  • Santa Maria – celeste
  • San Francesco – giallo

The fibreglass boats have 5 fixed seats with 8 oarsmen, a steetsman and a climber.
The distance covered is 1500 metres starting upstream from the Ponte della Ferrovia (the Railway Bridge), the finish being in front of the Palazzo Medici along the Lungarno Mediceo.

The final victory does not depende upon the arrival order of the boats but upon the climber’s skill who after boarding a boat anchored at the finishing line, has to climb up one of the 4 rodes reaching the top of a 10-metre-high mast hoisted on the boat in order to gasp the banner wich is the symbol of the victory. Two geese represent the meagre prize for the last crew to finish.

The catch of the banner recalls the ancient exploit at Lepanto, when the fleet of the Knights of Saint Stephen boarded the Turkish flagship and stole the Muslim fight banner waving on the mast. This banner, recently restored, is preserved in the Church of St Stephen of the Knights in Pisa.

  • the Gioco del Ponte on the last Sunday of June

This historically evocative event, called Gioco del Ponte – the Battle of the Bridge, consists of two distinct but equally significant moments: the historical processione along the River Arno, which is a huge military parade and the Battle on the Ponte di Mezzo, during which the two opposing teams give proof of their physical strenght in a strongly competitive atmosphere.

The event is traditionally held on the last Sunday of June and includes the historical parade with over 700 partecipants.
The Mezzogiorno and Tramontana sides march separately but at the same time anticlockwise along the four streets running along the Arno river close to the Ponte di Mezzo.

There is also a third parade composed by the Judges, that is 81 more partecipants.
Victory goes to the team that conquers the Bridge by pushing the cart and all the opponents to the opposite end of the sliding rail.

The different teams of Tramontana represent the districts of Santa Maria, San Francesco, San Michele, Mattaccini, Claci, Satiri.
Mezzogiono represent the districts of Sant’Antonio, San martino, San Marco, Leoni, Dragoni, Delfini

  • every 4 yeas, la Historical Regatta of Repubbliche Marinare

Since 1956 the cities of Amalfi, Genoa, Venice and Pisa have partecipated in the Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics. The event evockes the past glory of the most important episodies in the history of the four Maritime Republics.

The first official edition took place in Pisa on the 1st July of that year. Since then, every year the challenge is hosted in turn off the coast of Amalfi and Genoa, along the River Arno in Pisa and in the lagoon of Venice.

The four boats representing the four Republics are maked by different colours:
– Blu for Amalfi
– wuhite for Genoa
– red for Pisa
– green for Venice

Each boat has a figure-head at the prow:

– the winged horse for Amalfi
– the winged dragon for Genoa
– teh eagle for Pisa
– the lion for Venice

The Regatta is preceded by agreat parade of 320 pepole (80 for each Republic) which evokes the characteristics, the events and the characters of the history of these four ancient maritime cities, which during the Middle Ages ploughing the seas with their fleets prospered and spread their culture throughout the Mediterranean by means of their military and commercial dominion.

The peageant of Pisa goes back to the legend of Kinzika de’ Sismondi, the pisan heroine who according to the tradition saved the city from an invasion by Saracens.

Venice gets celebrating for the America’s Cup 2012

“Tradition and technology have the spirit of the America’s Cup in Venice: whythis event is combined with the city that, in spite of those who believed doomedto decay, looks to the future.” Word of Giorgio Orsoni, Venice mayor and president of the Society of sailing, the club that in the 1992 America’s Cup in San Diego gave his pennant to the Moro di Venezia.

Not by chance that the fulcrum of the event will see 12 to 20 May in front of St. Mark the challenges of America’s Cup World Series (races that take place in view of the 2013 America’s Cup in San Francisco) is the Arsenal. Where were born the galleys that have made Venice today there are the workshops of the barriers of Moses, which will protect the city from the top, and one of the most futuristic Venetian companies. “The Arsenal is the symbolic place of our future,”says Orsoni “and will be open to the public, to visit the team bases and attend parties and events. The city wants to reclaim that space: the first step was for the Biennale, now we have started the paperwork for reacquire it. This event willprove as useful to the city. ”

The race, ahead of San Marco and the Lido, will create problems for navigation? “All the events that lead so many people create some discomfort” Orsoni admits, “but we tried to reduce them indispensable. We count on the patience of the Venetians, hoping to take in a sporting spirit. Venice has always hoped to find a leader Raul Gardini as we did relive the excitement of the Cup and he found it in Patrizio Bertelli‘s Luna Rossa. ”

The event is organized by the committee Vivere Venezia: “We were lucky,” says the mayor, “because we found a group of entrepreneurs interested in developingthe city and the Lido, which has guaranteed the cost of living expenses.

The Cup is to revitalize the city: a pedestrian promenade and Naples have been exceptional, we have opened the Arsenal. “As for budgets, for now Orsoni has acertain fact: “The receptivity of Venice is nearly exhausted, we have 40 000 bedsand tell me I need to find a place to go to Treviso.”
