The Vatican said that the meeting between the pope and the revolutionary leader of Cuba and former President Fidel Castro was “lively and friendly.”Fidel, after the meeting, thanked Pope Benedict XVI and asked to recommend some books on the issues raised during the meeting.
Pope Benedict XVI returned to the Vatican on Thursday after meeting Fidel Castro at the end of a five-day visit to Cuba and Mexico.
The pontiff also blasted the United States trade embargo on Cuba and the lack of freedom in the Communist country before departing.
“No-one should feel excluded from taking up this exciting search by the limitations of their basic freedoms, or excused from this by indolence or a lack of material resources – a situation which is worsened when restrictive economic measures, imposed from outside the country, unfairly burden its people,” Benedict said at Havana airport in the presence of the Cuban President Raul Castro, Fidel’s brother.
